Flies

Find the breeding source, not just the flying adults.

Different flies require different solutions. Waste, decaying organic matter, drain deposits or other breeding sites can keep producing adults even after a surface treatment.

Egg

Eggs are placed in suitable breeding material.

What this means for control

Find and manage the source rather than only treating adults.

Egg → larva → pupa → adult → eggs. A house fly is used as the example. Drain flies and fruit flies share these broad stages but use different breeding materials. Diagram is schematic, not to scale. Timing varies with species, temperature, food and local conditions.

02 / Understand the behaviour

What keeps them going?

01

How they feed

House fly larvae feed in suitable moist organic material. Adults feed on liquid or liquefied food. Small flies associated with drains or fermenting material need a different source investigation.

02

How they survive

A continuing breeding source can produce new adults after visible flies have been removed. Moist deposits, waste and inaccessible organic material can sustain the problem.

03 / Routes & resources

How do they reach your premises?

Adults may enter through open doors or unscreened openings, or emerge from a breeding site already inside. Species identification helps separate an outdoor entry issue from an indoor source.

Food residues, poorly managed bins and moist organic material can support breeding. Unscreened openings allow outdoor flies to enter. The species helps point to the source.

04 / Confirm the concern

Signs worth investigating.

  • Repeated flies around bins, drains, preparation areas or doors.
  • Small flies returning despite cleaning visible surfaces.
  • Larvae or breeding material in waste or other organic deposits.

A sign is a reason to inspect, not proof of the species or extent of activity.

Control that addresses
the source.

THE CONTROL PRIORITY

Remove the material supporting immature stages, then reduce entry and monitor adult activity.

  1. Identify the fly type and check waste, drains, food residues and entry points.
  2. Locate the likely breeding material, including hidden deposits where accessible.
  3. Agree cleaning, waste and drainage actions with the site team.
  4. Place suitable monitoring or control equipment away from contamination-sensitive locations.
  5. Review fresh activity and investigate unresolved or inaccessible sources.

What elimination involves

An insect light trap can support monitoring or control, but cannot replace source removal. A recurring problem may require access to hidden breeding areas.

We agree the preparation, treatment scope and review points for your premises. Method, timing and follow-up depend on the confirmed pest, access and response to treatment.

06 / Avoid the setbacks

Why a problem can continue.

  • Spraying adults while leaving the breeding material in place.
  • Assuming every small fly is a drain fly.
  • Using a light trap as a substitute for hygiene and source removal.
07 / Protect the progress

Make it harder to return.

  • Keep refuse covered, remove it regularly and clean bin areas.
  • Maintain drains and remove accumulated organic deposits.
  • Maintain screens and door management; protect food from exposure.

08 / Clear answers

Questions we can help with.

Why are flies returning after spraying?

The breeding source may still be present, or flies may be entering from outside.

Are all small flies drain flies?

No. Identification matters because different species develop in different materials.

Can we use traps in a food business?

Placement and equipment must suit the food environment and avoid creating contamination risks.
